Faux Marble
Edgar Cobián
7 Sep. – 5 Oct. 2024
Future Gallery is pleased to present Faux Marble an exhibition of paintings and video by Mexican artist Edgar Cobián.
Edgar Cobián is a multidisciplinary artist who works from different disciplines, and frequently pushing the boundaries of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, video and performance. His work evokes forms of pop culture and art that seek to displace the Western references of art, specially painting and drawing, in order to dismantle the academic tradition and to question its heteropratiarchal white history. Deeply critical of contemporary societies, of the social and political struggles of the last century and of our understanding of the body, Cobian’s work vibrates between the experimental, a refined technique, and a certain dedication to an aesthetic closely related to pleasure. His perspective questions the articulation of art either in the political-economic system or in certain ethical and social frameworks, but he also rejoices in its hedonistic possibilities; for him, the impossibility of establishing a single rigid position or a single rigid morality demands more sensible, empathetic and free forms of thought. In this sense, Edgar Cobián’s recent work is situated in a broad approach to our different understandings of the body, from joy, its relationship with dance, its vulnerabilities and unfolded sensualities.
